    Cello Fingering Chart

Cello fingering chart covering first through fourth position.

    Cello Fingering Basics

The cello is tuned C-G-D-A (one octave lower than viola). Due to the larger size, the cello uses a different finger numbering and position system than violin/viola.

    Finger Numbers

    • 0: Open string
    • 1: Index finger
    • 2: Middle finger (whole step from 1)
    • 3: Ring finger (half step from 2 in closed position)
    • 4: Pinky

    Positions

Cello playing involves shifting between positions up and down the fingerboard. First position places the first finger near the nut; higher positions move the hand toward the bridge.
