Trombone Fingering Chart
Trombone slide position chart covering all seven positions.
How To Use A Trombone Slide Position Chart
Unlike valved brass instruments, the trombone uses a slide with seven positions. Each position moves the slide further out, lengthening the tubing and lowering the pitch.
The Seven Positions
- 1st Position: Slide all the way in
- 2nd Position: Just past the bell
- 3rd Position: At the bell
- 4th Position: Just past the bell rim
- 5th Position: Between 4th and 6th
- 6th Position: Near full extension
- 7th Position: Full extension
Partials And Positions
The trombone plays different notes in the same position by changing embouchure and air speed (partials). Each position has a harmonic series of available notes.
