How To Use A Trombone Slide Position Chart

Unlike valved brass instruments, the trombone uses a slide with seven positions. Each position moves the slide further out, lengthening the tubing and lowering the pitch.

    The Seven Positions

    • 1st Position: Slide all the way in
    • 2nd Position: Just past the bell
    • 3rd Position: At the bell
    • 4th Position: Just past the bell rim
    • 5th Position: Between 4th and 6th
    • 6th Position: Near full extension
    • 7th Position: Full extension

    Partials And Positions

The trombone plays different notes in the same position by changing embouchure and air speed (partials). Each position has a harmonic series of available notes.
